About Us

Sumner Bridge Club was founded in mid-1968 by a few members of the Sumner Croquet Club who were casually playing Rubber Bridge when the possibility of an organised Duplicate Bridge Club in Sumner was mentioned. From that moment on the Sumner Bridge Club was born and was officially opened at the current Dryden Street premises on April 21st 1970, with a membership of 80.

By 1973 the membership had grown to an impressive 150, but with tension growing over the issue of smoking; in 1975 a large group broke away from the Sumner Bridge Club forming a new non-smoking Mount Pleasant Club. This left a reduced but still more than adequate membership at Sumner which is now also a non-smoking club!

Subscription fee: $40.00 per year.

Our club rooms which also boast a fully equipped kitchen, are used by other groups including the Sumner Mahjong Club, and are available for hire.
